2026 Audi RS5 Revealed with 639hp V6 Plug-in Hybrid, 80km EV Range and New Quattro AWD

Audi RS5 reborn as 639hp V6 PHEV

Based on the new-gen A5, the performance hybrid is available in sedan and estate body styles. The 2026 Audi RS5 has just been revealed in both sedan and estate forms, and it is the first of a new generation of plug-in hybrid performance cars from Audi Sport. Pairing the previous RS5’s 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 with a gearbox-mounted electric motor and a battery pack, the new-gen model sends 639hp and 825Nm through a new version of Audi’s Quattro AWD system. This new model replaces both the RS4 Avant and the RS5 Sportback and coupe globally.

New RS5 powered by 639hp plug-in hybrid V6

The new RS5 arrives at its headline power figures with the high-performance 2,894cc twin-turbocharged EA839 V6, shared with Porsche, producing 510hp. Assistance from a 130kW electric motor mounted inside the 8-speed torque-converter automatic allows total power to reach 639hp. This is 189hp more than the outgoing RS5 and 272hp more than the new Audi S5 mild-hybrid.

All this has brought the 0-100kph time down to 3.6sec, which is 0.3sec quicker than the outgoing RS4 Avant. However, there has also been a considerable weight gain of 550kg, with the new PHEV Avant weighing 2,370kg, while the sedan is about 15kg lighter.

Up to 80km electric-only driving range

The battery pack has a capacity of 25.9kWh, with 22kWh usable. Audi says this allows the new RS5 to be driven more than 80km in electric-only mode when fully charged. Charging can be done using an AC charger at speeds of up to 11kW. Audi engineers say the powertrain ensures the RS5 feels like an RS model even when driving electrically.

The battery pack sits above the rear differential and reduces boot space. The Avant offers 361 litres, which is 115 litres less than the non-hybrid A5 Avant. The sedan offers around 350 litres of space.

New-generation Quattro AWD system introduced

The 2026 RS5 introduces a new version of Audi’s all-wheel drive system. The 8-speed torque-converter gearbox connects to a limited-slip centre differential, which can send up to 85 percent of torque to the rear wheels or up to 70 percent to the front wheels. It also has a pre-load function that keeps it partially locked for quicker response and faster power redistribution.

The electro-mechanical rear differential with Dynamic Torque Control uses an electric actuator supplying 8kW and 40Nm to distribute torque between the rear wheels instantly. Audi says it reacts in 15 milliseconds and is governed by its own ECU analysing driver input and vehicle behaviour in real time.

Interior gets sporty and functional updates

The B10 Audi A5 and platform siblings introduced large screens and fewer physical controls. Recently, the A5, S5, Q5, SQ5 and RS5 switched from capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel to hard buttons and click-wheels. Screen graphics have been updated to be brighter and easier to read while driving.

The interior uses Dinamica suede on the dashboard, doors and seats, with red accents across upholstery, trim and lighting. Heated, massaging and powered sports bucket seats are standard, while ventilation is optional. Rear seat space remains reasonable, and a sunroof is optional.

Wider stance and aggressive RS design

The new RS5 has grown 90mm wider than the standard A5. Wider tracks and flared wheel arches highlight the aggressive stance. The design includes a large grille, aggressive air intakes, race-inspired LED DRLs, oval exhausts within the rear diffuser and standard 20-inch wheels. Optional 21-inch wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes are also available.

The sedan features a fastback-style roof, while the Avant has a tapered roofline and sharply raked rear windscreen. Both versions offer a wide stance and strong road presence.

Sedan and Avant body styles available globally

The performance hybrid is available in sedan and estate body styles. The sedan is technically a liftback, while the Avant offers more practicality. Both versions replace previous RS models globally and represent the next generation of Audi Sport performance vehicles.

2026 Audi RS5 India launch possible

There is currently no confirmation about the India launch of the new Audi RS5. With the India-EU FTA on the horizon, the model could be introduced as a fully imported vehicle. As a high-value, low-volume halo model, it would require less commitment for Audi compared to other models like the Q3, Q5, Q6, A5 and A6.
